NEW ORLEANS, La. - College of Idaho coaches Austin Basterrechea and Mike Anderson took home top honors as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced their 2021 Outdoor Track & Field Regional Coaches of the Year awards.
Each of the five regions - Great Lakes, Midwest, South, South Central and West - honored top track and field athletes, head coaches and assistant coaches for both genders - with Basterrechea and Anderson sweeping the West Region coaching awards.
Basterrechea completed clean sweep of the women's West Region awards this season - having already claimed both the cross country and indoor track head coaching honors. The Coyote leader led C of I to an unprecedented seventh Cascade Conference Championship title, dominate the 10-team field last weekend in La Grande, Ore.
Anderson was honored as West Region Assistant Coach of the Year, as the longtime distance coach for the Yotes was instrumental in the win at the CCC Championships - as C of I claimed wins in the 5,000-meters, 10,000-meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase, while adding all-conference honors in both the 800 and 1,500-meters.
Both Basterrechea and Anderson will be among the finalists for the USTFCCCA National Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year.
C of I closes out the 2021 track season next weekend at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala.
