LA GRANDE, Ore. – School records from
Lane Maher and
Bryan Terry and a dominant performance by the Coyotes in the shot put helped The College of Idaho to a Day 1 lead at the 2021 Cascade Conference Men's Track & Field Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, at Banner Bank Track.
Led by eight podium finishes and two individual championships, the Yotes recorded 122 points through 11 events – just ahead of host Eastern Oregon (108), with Southern Oregon a close third.
Maher was a part of a historic 110-meter race, as both he and Southern Oregon's Bryce Goggin surpassed the 27-year old CCC record (14.49) set by Alper Kasapoglu of Western Oregon in 1994. Maher clocked a school-record time of 14.48 seconds – to place second overall, as Goggin earned the league mark with his winning time of 14.46 seconds.
Terry had a big day in the hammer throw, blitzing the C of I school record by nearly two meters, winning the event with a monster mark of 56.41 meters (185 feet, 1 inch).
The shot put was the story of the day, as C of I had six athletes score in the event, including the top-five positions.
Stephen Campbell continued his big year by claiming the league title (16.06 meters / 52 feet, 8.25 inches), just ahead of Terry (15.60 / 51-2.25) and
Alec Kuzmack (15.18 / 49-9.75). Both
Brad Cushman (14.97 / 49-1.5) and
Collin Glass (14.87 / 48-9.5) each recorded seasonal-best to take fourth and fifth.
Three other Coyotes earned All-CCC honors –
Braden Heath with a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:51.41);
Daniel Butler with a third-place finish in the 1,500-meters (3:58.05); and
Caleb Brown in the high jump (1.90 meters / 6 feet, 2.25 inches).
