SALEM, Ore. –
Austin Van Horne went 6-for-10 with four RBI on the day and struck out eight batters in eight strong innings on the mound in the nightcap, as The College of Idaho split a Sunday doubleheader with Corban University at Volcanoes Stadium.
The Warriors (4-12, 3-1 CCC) used a late-inning rally to win Game 1, 8-7, while the Yotes rode the right arm of Van Horne for a 7-2 Game 2 victory.
The right-hander was dominant, holding Corban to just four hits and two runs – retiring the final eight batters he faced in a row.
The Coyotes (9-10, 1-3) offense provided enough firepower – as a 4-run fifth inning, keyed by a
Jonah Hultberg RBI double and a 2-run home run from
Weston Miller, gave the visitors a 6-1 lead.
Ben Hansen went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, with both Hultberg and Van Horne each recording 2-hit games.
In the opener, C of I built a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning – but were unable to hold the margin.
Bases-loaded walks to
Matthew Clay and
Dillon Danner and RBI singles from Van Horne and
Alec Hopkins staked the Yotes out to the lead. Corban answered, scoring four fifth-inning runs of their own – the big blast a Zack Simon 2-run homer.
Simon struck again in the eighth, ripping a go-ahead 2-run double, as the hosts took an 8-5 lead to the ninth. The Coyotes did not go down quietly, as a Van Horne RBI single pulled C of I within 8-7, but the senior was stranded in scoring position to end the game.
Van Horne went 4-for-5 with his third home run of the season,
Carter Vieira had three hits and Hultberg added two hits and two runs scored.
C of I returns home next weekend, hosting Eastern Oregon in a 4-game series.
