CALDWELL, Idaho – College of Idaho scored a goal just seven seconds into the game, setting the tone for a dominating 21-3 victory over the University of Idaho in the Yotes season opener at Simplot Stadium.
The duo of
R.J. Walker and
Hank Ontiveros combined for 11 goals and four assists, as the No. 5-ranked Coyotes (1-0) picked up their first-ever win against the Vandals (0-3).
Ontiveros won the opening face-off and laced a pass to Walker, who found the back of the net for the early lead. Walker added a second tally and
Dylan Martinez scored twice in the period, as the Coyotes built a 7-1 edge after 15 minutes and were never headed.
Walker finished with five goals and two helpers, with Ontiveros adding six goals and two assists.
Joey Brant scored three times for the Coyotes, with Martinez,
Ed Osterberger and
Casey Davies all finishing with two goals. Goalie
Cade Brown had saves in 45 minutes of action.
The Yotes return to play next Saturday, hosting Southern Oregon at 1 p.m.
