Yotes Rally, But William Jessup Earns Twinbill Sweep

CALDWELL, Idaho – College of Idaho used rallies in both games of today's doubleheader with No. 14-ranked William Jessup get back into both contests, but the Warriors were able to hang on to complete a Saturday sweep at Wolfe Field.

WJU (7-2) scored three runs in the final two innings of the opener to win 9-6, while the Warriors outlasted the Yotes in Game 2, 9-7, to win the series three games to one.

The Yotes (1-7) had 22 hits in the doubleheader – including two home runs – but the early deficits proved to be too much.

The Warriors took a 6-1 lead in Game 1 – as Mike Shoenberger had a single, double and triple in the first four innings alone – his RBI triple in the fourth building the 5-run lead.

C of I evened the score in the middle innings – getting a Carter Vieira RBI double in the fourth, Anthony Pannullo lined a two-run single in the fifth, with Austin Van Horne launching a solo homer and Jake Denison lined an RBI single in the sixth to make it 6-6.

A Kawai Takamura RBI double in the eighth gave the visitors the lead, with Jay Luevano adding a two-run double in the ninth for insurance.

Brett Wetteland pitched four shutout innings of relief for the Warriors in earning the win, with Van Horne going 3-for-4 in the loss for C of I.

WJU bolted to a 8-1 lead in Game 2 – taking advantage of seven C of I walks – with Shoenberger hitting a first inning 3-run homer.

The Coyotes did not quit – as a Jonah Hultberg 2-run homer in the fourth pulled C of I within 8-4, while in the seventh, RBI singles from Denison and Ryan Nolan got the hosts within 9-7 and brought the tying run to the plate – but Jordan Yu used a strikeout to end the game.

Nolan was 3-for-5 with a double and RBI, with Hultberg, Denison, Pannullo and Weston Miller all adding two hits. Ben Tighe was solid in relief, allowing two runs in five-plus innings of work.

C of I hits the road next weekend for five games in San Diego – meeting both San Diego Christian and Baker University.
