SALEM, Ore. - The College of Idaho played toe-to-toe for 45 minutes with a Corban University side that has qualified for six-straight NAIA National Championships. However, an early goal in the second half proved to be the difference, as the Warriors topped the Yotes, 2-0, at the CFC Complex.
Behind three first half saves from
Parker Billings, the Yotes (2-2, 0-1 CCC) played even with the hosts - with a drive from
Bekir Cinac in the 18th minute missing just high.
However, the Warriors (3-0-1, 1-0), who opened the year ranked No. 18 in the NAIA Top-25 poll, turned the tide in the 51st minute - as Matheus Giron played a ball into the area, with Yuki Onishi driving home the counter.
Corban would hold the possession throughout the final 45 minutes, limiting C of I to just one shot - a
Ben Bechor drive in the 70th minute that missed just wide.
The Warriors would get an insurance goal within the final minute of play, as Nate Sherwood buried a free kick following a Coyote foul outside the box.
Corban finished the match with a 14-2 edge in total shots and took the only three corner kicks of the afternoon.
C of I returns to action tomorrow, traveling to Northwest Christian for a 3 p.m. (PT) start.
