NEWBERG, Ore. – In the first match-up between the teams in 25 years, goals by
Cole Fuller and
Ben Bechor were the difference, as College of Idaho completed a weekend sweep in the Willamette Valley, topping George Fox, 2-0, at Austin Sports Complex.
The Yotes (2-1) had the run of the pitch throughout the contest – but weathered an early storm by the hosts – as a Simon Dye header in the seventh minute banged off the crossbar and following a foul in the box, C of I keeper
Parker Billings had to make a stop of a Ohm Harape penalty kick.
While the Coyote defense held the Bruins (1-1) to just four shots over the final 83 minutes, C of I went to work. Just before the break,
Cole Fuller pounced on a rebound of a
Ryan Gamboa shot, ripping a shot from the middle of the box into the left corner of the net for the lead.
C of I added to the lead in the 85th minute, as
Bekir Cinac made a nifty through-ball to Bechor, slotting the finish into the right corner of the net.
Billings did the rest, stopping all three GFU shots on frame to earn the shutout victory.
The Yotes held a 15-6 edge in total shots and a 5-3 edge in corners.
C of I will scrimmage Walla Walla CC next week, their final tune-up before the start of Cascade Conference play.
