CALDWELL, Idaho –
Hunter Boyd tossed a complete-game six-hitter, handcuffing the potent Lewis-Clark State offense all afternoon, as the College of Idaho opened a 4-game series between the Gem State rivals with a 4-1 victory at Wolfe Field.
Boyd walked just two men and struck out four – limiting the Warriors (5-8-1, 1-4 NAIA West) line-up to just six singles – in picking up C of I's first complete game victory of the year.
L-C took a 1-0 lead in the third on a Darren Trainor RBI single – but Boyd stranded runners at second and third – and the Warriors had just one runner reach third base the rest of the day.
The Yotes (10-14, 4-1) answered in the bottom of the frame as
Chase Labbe singled and
Caden Jensen reached on a fielders choice – with Labbe safe and second on a bang-bang play. After a sacrifice bunt,
Payton Lewis evened the score with an RBI single, followed by a
Matthew Clay sacrifice fly to give C of I a 2-1 lead.
C of I added to the lead in the sixth – taking advantage of an L-C error and a balk.
Austin Van Horne made it 3-1 with an RBI single, with
Dylan Mansanarez driving home a run with an infield out.
Four different Coyotes had one hit, while Trainor went 2-for-3 in the loss for the Warriors. L-C starter Tyler Burch took the loss, allowing just four hits and striking out seven in six innings.
The two teams continue the series tomorrow with a noon doubleheader.
