CALDWELL, Idaho – Using a size advantage inside the box, the University of Providence scored on a pair of headers inside the final 30 minutes to erase a halftime deficit, topping the College of Idaho, 2-1, at Simplot Stadium.
Locked in a tie game, the Argos (5-2-1, 3-2 CCC) converted on a set piece to earn the victory. A 77th-minute corner kick by Seamus Quinn found the head of the elevated 6-foot-2 Fernando Gutierrez, knocking the 6-yard shot into the left corner of the net for the game-winner.
The Coyotes (3-4, 1-3) took advantage of a foul on a
Ben Bechor breakaway attempt early in the first half – with
Ahmet Huremovic driving home the resulting 15th minute penalty kick into the right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
C of I would be on the defensive, as UP held a 14-6 edge in total shots – including a 10-3 mark in the second half. The Argos attack would finally pay off in the 63rd minute, as Alain Murhula looped a left-footed cross into the middle of the box – with 6-foot-1 Manuel Garcia firmly heading home the equalizer.
Playing a man down over the final 13 minutes, C of I had one final push – but could not convert on an 88th minute corner kick and a late Bechor drive from the left side of the area missed wide.
The Yotes return to action tomorrow, hosting Carroll College at 2:30 p.m.
