ASHLAND, Ore. – Southern Oregon continued their home field dominance, scoring a goal in each half, as the Raiders earned a 2-0 Cascade Conference men's soccer victory over the College of Idaho at Raider Stadium.
SOU (6-5, 4-2 CCC) improved to 15-0-1 at home over the past three seasons, using an early goal to take a lead and peppered the Coyote goal throughout the contest.
In the eighth minute, Kelly Gieber made a run down the left side, playing a ball to leading scorer Adrian Villegas inside the box, touching home the game winner.
Five minutes later, Southern nearly made it 2-0, as a foul in the box gave Gieber a chance from the spot, but Coyotes (4-5, 2-4) keeper
Parker Billings stuffed the left post attempt – his second stop of a penalty kick opportunity this season.
C of I had a chance for the equalizer late in the first half – getting a 2-on-1 counter-attack opportunity – but a 20-yard
Andrew Lauritzen strike missed just high.
SOU continued the pressure in the second half – but Billings was outstanding, recording seven saves on the afternoon. However, the Raiders got an insurance goal late in the 83rd minute, Sam Walker collected a rebound in traffic off a corner kick and flicked home the counter.
The Raiders held a 15-6 edge in total shots and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Wyatt Zabinski made one save in recording the shutout.
C of I returns to action tomorrow afternoon, traveling to Oregon Tech for a Noon (PDT) start.
