SURREY, B.C. – Forced to play a tripleheader of Cascade Conference games for the second time this season, the College of Idaho dropped 2-of-3 games to British Columbia at Softball City.
The Lady Yotes (17-16, 7-11 CCC) dropped a marathon 4-3 10-inning decision in the opener, used a big seventh inning to break open a 7-2 victory in the middle game, with UBC limiting C of I to just three hits in an 8-1 T-Birds win in Game 3.
The two teams have decided to cancel Saturday's non-conference game due to the forecast of rain.
In Game 1, C of I trailed 2-1 after four innings, but rallied to take the lead in the fifth. The Yotes loaded the bases with no outs, tying the score on a
Taylor Eakle infield single and taking the lead on a
Colette Robert fielders' choice. However, a Paige Harbord two-out RBI single in the sixth tied the score – forcing extra innings.
C of I had their best chance to regain the lead in the ninth, putting two runners on with two outs, but a pop up ended the threat. In the tenth, UBC (7-17, 5-11) got back-to-back singles to open the frame, with Emily Chorpita scoring on an infield out to end the contest.
Eakle and
Courtney Ellis each had two hits in the loss for C of I, with Robert allowing three earned runs on 14 hits. Sydney Brown went 4-for-5 for UBC, with Emma Tuson going the distance for the victory, striking out seven.
The Yotes never trailed in Game 2 – scoring two runs in the first on a pair of UBC errors – with
Martha Tooley adding a solo homer in the fourth to extend the margin to 3-1.
Leading 3-2 in the seventh, singles by
Delaney Atkins and Lexie Miller set the table for
Trystin Crofts, who blasted her team-leading sixth homer of the year to break the game open.
Loryn Fonger got her second-straight win, allowing just five hits in five and two-thirds innings, with
Ali Longoria getting the final four outs for her first save. Atkins, Crofts and Tooley all had two hits for C of I.
Game 3 was all T-Birds, scoring a pair in the first inning and Harbord clearing the bases with a double in the fourth to give the hosts a 7-0 lead.
It was more than enough for Chantelle Twynstra, who allowed an unearned run on three hits, striking out six for UBC.
C of I returns home next weekend, hosting nationally-ranked Corban – with Saturday the second-annual First Responders Day at Symms Field.
