CALDWELL, Idaho –
Nich Guzzetti scored seven goals and tied a College of Idaho school record with seven assists, as the Coyotes moved a game away from clinching their second-straight Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League South Division title, blasting Southern Oregon, 29-5, at Simplot Stadium.
Guzzetti, the all-time leading scorer in program history, factored on five of the Coyotes (8-2, 4-0 PNCLL) nine first quarter goals, as the hosts recorded their most lopsided win against the rival Raiders.
A Guzzetti goal, back-to-back strikes from
Tyler Sanchez and
Joey Brant assisting on goals by both
Cory Brady and Guzzetti, helped C of I build a 5-0 lead just six minutes into the contest. Brant added three of his seven goals in the period, as the Yotes took a 9-1 lead after 15 minutes, a margin that would grow to 18-3 at the break.
The one-sided match-up saw the Coyotes win 32 of the 36 face-offs, including 18 from
Avyion Fisher, with Brady recording 18 of C of I's 76 ground ball recoveries.
Seven different C of I players scored multiple goals – as Brady tallied four goals and four assists, Sanchez and
R.J. Walker each scored three goals, with
Dami Ashaye and
Jason Leach both scoring two. Brant added four assists in the victory, with
Jonah Jordan needing to make just four saves in the victory.
Guzzetti tied the single-game assists record set by Colin Burke during 2007 season in a win over Lewis & Clark. He also pushed his single-season assist mark to 29, surpassing
Dillon Green's school record of 27 helpers set last season.
C of I closes out the regular-season tomorrow at Symms Field, hosting the University of Portland at Noon. The Yotes will honor their four senior student-athletes in a pregame ceremony – Guzzetti, Brady,
Bryan Dilworth and
Willy Budell.
