SURPRISE, Ariz. – A three-run fifth inning rally broke a 3-3 tie, as the College of Idaho salvaged a four-game series split with Ottawa (Ariz.), claiming today's series finale, 7-3, at Surprise Stadium.
Singles by
Dominic Conigliaro and
Kole Lane opened the fifth inning, with the duo moving up 90 feet on a ground out. A wild pitch allowed pinch-runner
Mike Kirby to score from third to give C of I (5-8) a 4-3 lead, with
Nick Mooney doubling home Lane and
Nate Hundley following with a run-scoring single.
It was enough for Conigliaro, who tossed eight innings of three-run ball, striking out three, to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Maverick Williams coaxed a ground out with two men on in the ninth to record his first collegiate save.
Lane capped a solid weekend, going 3-for-5 – including a second inning RBI single - with
Johnny Hyland and
Austin Van Horne each recording two hits.
The Coyotes return home next weekend for a three-game series vs. Division II Montana State-Billings.
