MESA, Ariz. –
Jordan Maddox tied a school record with nine total bases in Game 1 today, as the College of Idaho split a doubleheader at Benedictine University at Mesa.
Maddox had two doubles, a single and a solo home run in the 8-3 victory in the opener, adding a solo homer in the Lady Yotes 7-5 loss in Game 2. She tied the school record of Dani Villyard, who had nine total bases in a 2009 win at Eastern Oregon.
C of I jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the opener and withstood 15 hits by the Redhawks (1-1).
Courtney Ellis doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the first inning, while a double-steal in the second inning allowed
Taylor Eakle to scamper home for a 2-0 lead.
The Yotes batted around in the third to plate six runs – with two-run doubles by
Delaney Atkins and
Angelina Romero providing the big blast. Maddox capped the scoring with a sixth inning solo homer.
Colette Robert walked one and struck out four in the complete game win – improving to 3-0 on the young season.
The afternoon game went back and forth – with BEN-U winning the game on a walk-off homer from Arianna Anzaldua in the seventh inning.
Ellis tripled to lead off the game for the Yotes and scored on a
Kylie Smith single – only to see the Redhawks score a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning.
C of I regained the lead in the third – as
Kristin Paulazzo lined an RBI double and scored on an error. After BEN-U tied the score in the fourth, Maddox clubbed her second homer of the day to give the Yotes a 4-3 lead.
The hosts jumped on the Yotes bullpen – rattling off a pair of walks, followed by two hits – to plate two fifth inning runs to take the lead. Down to their final out, Atkins lined an RBI double to left to score Smith from second to tie the game – only to see Anzaldua win it in the bottom of the inning.
Ellis, Smith, Atkins, Paulazzo and
Micha Fortune all had two hits for the Lady Yotes, while Dayton Yingling went 4-for-4 with two RBI for BEN-U.
C of I closes out their road trip tomorrow with a doubleheader at Arizona Christian.
