UBC Pitching Handcuffs Yotes in Doubleheader Sweep

VANCOUVER, B.C. – University of British Columbia pitchers limited the College of Idaho to just one run in today's doubleheader, as the T-Birds earned crucial 2-0 and 3-1 victories over the Yotes at Thunderbird Park.

Alex Webb dominated C of I batters, striking out a season-high 13 men in Game 1, while Connor Noble and Tyler Gillies combined on a seven-hitter in Game 2 for UBC (33-16, 19-10 NAIA West).

Game 1 was a pitchers' duel, as Webb and the Coyotes' (30-17, 17-12) Zach Draper matched zeroes throughout.  UBC scratched across an unearned run in the second on an Anthony Olson RBI ground out and added a single run in the fifth after a Draper balk.

Mitch Skaggs had three singles for the Yotes – advancing into scoring position in the first and sixth innings – but C of I was unable to plate him, as Webb worked out of trouble.

Lucas Soper had three hits for the T-Birds.

C of I struck first in Game 2, as Hunter Hanson ripped his seventh homer of the season in the third.

UBC answered in the fifth, as Olson singled home the tying run, with Bruce Yari lifting a sacrifice fly to give the T-Birds a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The Yotes had chances, stranding the tying run a third base in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Hanson was 3-for-5 in the loss, with starter Joel Martin allowing two runs on three hits in four-plus innings and reliever Drew Klassen tossing two-plus innings of scoreless relief.

The two teams close out the weekend series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. (PDT) doubleheader.
