CALDWELL, Idaho – Mandi Achten scored a pair of goals and Rocky Mountain College held off a furious College of Idaho rally, as the Bears remained perfect in conference play with a 2-1 victory at Simplot Stadium.
Achten scored the game-winner in the 52nd minute on the Bears (5-2-1, 3-0 CCC) lone shot of the second half, as the Montana side survived a flurry by the Yotes.
Rocky dominated the first half, holding the majority of possession, breaking through in the 27th minute. Achten collected a loose ball and roped a low 25-yard shot that snuck under C of I (6-2, 2-1) keeper Brittany Houghton's reach.
The Yotes had a pair of opportunities in the first five minutes of the second half, as Erika Thompson played a great through-ball to Jamiece Yizar, but her flick from the left side missed just wide, followed by a looping 20-yard drive from Katelyn Benavidez that sailed right of the post.
In the 52nd minute, Achten took a pass at the top of the 18-yard box near the far sideline, making a run into the box, slicing a liner into the right corner of the net to make it 2-0.
C of I got a goal back in the 58th minute, as Thompson made a spirited run down the middle of the field, ripping a left-footed 25-yard shot over Bears keeper Lia Unterholzner and into the net.
The Yotes continued the pressure, getting three quality chances in the final 10 minutes, including a Thompson 20-yard shot just before the final horn that was snared by Unterholzner to preserve the win.
Both teams had eight shots and nine fouls in the contest, with Rocky holding a slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The two teams return to action in two weeks, traveling to Carroll and Great Falls.
