CALDWELL, Idaho - Jamiece Yizar scored a pair of first half goals and the College of Idaho defense made them hold up, as the Lady Yotes toppled Southern Oregon, 2-1, in the Cascade Conference opener at Simplot Stadium.
The Yotes (5-1, 1-0 CCC) are off to their best start since 2009, riding five saves from keeper Brittany Houghton to keep SOU at bay.
C of I dominated the first half, nearly taking the lead in the seventh minute, as Yizar played a ball to Erika Thompson in the left side of the box, eluding Raiders (1-4-2, 0-1) keeper Kylie Moltzen, but driving her low shot off the right post.
The Lady Yotes kept the pressure on, breaking through in the 20th minute, as a Summer Jackson through-ball found Yizar, who slotted a shot past the lunging Moltzen. Â Seven minutes later, Hailey Boyd launched a long ball that Yizar ran onto, stepping past Molzen and flicking home the counter.
Southern made it a game in the second half, controlling possession during the opening 30 minutes. Â In the 53rd minute, Lisa Elledge collected a loose ball in the left side of the area, lining a low shot that surged past Houghton to cut the margin to 2-1. Â The Raiders had a flurry in front of the net in the 56th minute that C of I turned away, along with two corner kicks that did not net a shot.
The Raiders held a slim 10-9 edge in total shots, with C of I holding a 5-3 margin in corner kicks.
C of I returns to action on Sunday, hosting Oregon Tech at noon.
