CALDWELL, Idaho – Limiting Dickinson State to just one earned run on the afternoon, the College of Idaho completed a four-game sweep of the Blue Hawks with a pair of victories today at Wolfe Field.
The Yotes (14-7), who have won 10-of-11, rode a strong outing from Zach Fabricius in Game 1 for a 4-0 win, then hung on for a 4-3 victory in the night cap.
Fabricius tossed seven shutout innings for his second-straight win, working around eight singles, while striking out eight. Joel Martin and Mitch Viydo got the final six outs to close out C of I's third-straight shutout.
C of I jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning as Troy Carr doubled home Jordan Grubbs to get the Yotes on the board, with Carr scoring on a wild pitch. The hosts would extend the lead in the fifth, as Jake Hennessey drove in a pair with a two-out RBI single.
DSU (3-6) starter Chas Allen limited C of I to just six hits in the complete game loss, with Landon Briscoe going 3-for-4 for the Blue Hawks.
C of I started early in Game 2, as first inning back-to-back two-out RBI singles from Hennessey and Kyle Garvin staked the hosts to a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Hawks ended a 29 inning scoreless drought in the third inning, as Ryan Mitchell scored on a C of I error, with DSU tying the game in the fourth on a Sam Bisson RBI ground out.
The Coyotes regained the lead in the sixth, as Sam Grise walked, with courtesy runner Brady Mooney stealing second and third – scoring when Ryan Risse's throw to third ended up in left field. C of I added a key insurance run in the seventh on a Garvin RBI ground out.
In the ninth, DSU made it interesting, as a two-out RBI Briscoe single off Viydo, the Yotes closer, got the Blue Hawks within a run. However, the right-hander buckled down, striking out Jordan Tescher with the tying run at third to end the game.
Joel Martin got the win in relief, tossing two shutout innings, striking out three – as four C of I pitchers combined on a three-hitter. Cole Mansanerez was 3-for-3 with two runs scored for the Yotes.
C of I returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Whitman in a doubleheader, beginning at 2 p.m.
