Coyotes Stay Hot, Sweep Whitman

CALDWELL, Idaho - Jordan Grubbs went 6-for-8 with three RBI and crossed the plate four times as the College of Idaho kept their winning ways, sweeping Whitman College in a pair of games at Wolfe Field earlier this afternoon.

The Coyotes (16-7) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game one, getting a run in the first on a Cole Mansanerez single to left field, scoring Grubbs in the first and Grise scoring in the second on a Grubbs single to right field.

The Missionaries (2-10) had not seen action in nine days entering the double-header but quickly knotted things up in the third frame when Paul Heywood doubled to left field, scoring Adrian Vela who drove in the first Whitman run earlier in the inning.

Catcher Sam Grise drove in the winning run of the opening game in the fourth inning, putting enough contact on the ball to score Zach Fabricius.

Russell Sweet picked up his first win on the season with Kyle Garvin closing things out in the condensed seven inning game.

Both teams drew early blood in the second game, scoring two runs apiece in the opening frame.

Whitman pushed the lead to 5-2 in through the top half of the seventh, but the Coyotes scored five runs over the next two innings to take a two-run advantage into the ninth.

The Missionaries scored two runs on three hits in the top of the ninth to tie the game. C of I was unable to get anything going in the bottom half of the inning, eventually leaving two runners on base as the two sides headed into extras.

With the game still tied in the bottom of the tenth, Johnny Hyland came to the plate with two outs and the bases juiced. Hyland would watch four pitches miss the zone and the Coyotes walked-off with a 8-7 victory.

The pair of wins moved C of I to 10-3 at Wolfe Field, including seven straight victories. C of I will return to action on Saturday when they play host to Corban to open NAIA West play up. The double-header is slated to get underway at noon.
