WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitman College outscored the College of Idaho 23-7 in the third quarter, helping the Missionaries defeat the Lady Yotes, 79-47, inside the Sherwood Center.
Box Score Whitman (2-0) made 59-percent of their field goals on the afternoon, as Maegen Martin came off the bench to score 15 points – one of five players in double-figures.
The Whits jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the opening, but back-to-back buckets by
Brittany Wirth and a trey from
Jaycin Tini helped the Yotes (0-4) draw even at 16-16. The hosts countered in a big way, as Martin scored six points in an 18-2 run over the next nine minutes spanning the two quarters, helping WC take a 37-27 halftime edge.
A Tini basket early in the third quarter cut the deficit to single digits, but Hailey Ann Maeda hit two 3-pointers in an 18-2 Whitman run that put the game away.
Maeda and Alysse Ketner each scored 14 points, with Hailey McDonald and Chelsi Brewer scoring 10 for the Whits, who made 27-of-40 field goals inside the arc.
Petra Lumpert had 16 points and Tini chipped in with 11 points in the loss for C of I. The Yotes made just 34-percent of their field goal tries, including 3-of-16 shooting from outside the arc.
The Yotes open their home schedule on Friday, hosting the Best Western Caldwell Inn and Suites Lady Yote Classic.
