SPOKANE, Wash. – Callie Harwood scored six of her eight points in a 13-0 run to close the game, as Whitworth University stopped the College of Idaho, 73-58, inside Whitworth Fieldhouse.
Box Score In a game filled with runs, the Division III Pirates (1-1) held the Yotes without a made field goal over the final five minutes of the fourth quarter to earn the home victory.
The Lady Yotes (0-3) used a 10-2 run early in the final quarter to cut a 10-point deficit to 60-58 on a
Jaycin Tini 3-pointer. But K.C. McConnell responded with a jump shot, Briann Maley scored off a C of I turnover, and Harwood scored back-to-back baskets to extend the lead to 68-58 and run away with the win.
Surges were the story on the night, as a 14-4 second quarter run, keyed by back-to-back 3's from
Brittany Wirth and
Haylee Burnham, gave the Yotes a 31-27 lead. The Bucs countered with triples from Jessica Thoens and Maley, with two McConnell lay-ups capping a 10-1 run to end the half. WU would use a 9-point push at the end of the third quarter to build a 10-point lead, setting the stage for the wild final period.
McConnell and Thoens each had 14 points for the Pirates, as WU made 9-of-20 3-point attempts and all eight free throws. The Bucs forced 16 C of I turnovers, turning them into 21 points.
Tini led C of I with 19 points and six rebounds, with Burnham scoring a season-high 13 points and Wirth adding 12 points and six boards.
C of I returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a 3 p.m. tip-off at Whitman College.
