CALDWELL, Idaho – Despite owning the majority of possession during the afternoon, the College of Idaho could not overcome two early Warner Pacific goals, as the Knights held off the Yotes, 2-1, at Simplot Stadium.
PHOTO GALLERY - Warner Pacific at C of I WPC (8-5-1, 6-2-1 CCC) won for the fifth straight time, earning three points in the Cascade Conference table despite being outshot 13-7 by the Yotes and allowing six corner kick chances.
The Knights opened the scoring in the 11th minute, as Patrick Aguirre played a ball to the middle of the box on a counter-attack, finding the foot of Mario Guizar, who slotted a shot past C of I keeper Grant Billings.
The visitors made it 2-0 after a rush up the pitch in the 22nd minute, Guizar played a low pass to Cesar Esquivel in the right corner of the box, ripping a low liner into the left corner of the net.
The Coyotes (6-4, 5-4) made their surge after halftime, breaking through in the 72nd minute on a rocket of a goal from Joe Bolin, taking a touch from Andres Idoeta and blasting a 25-yard laser into the top shelf of the net.
C of I had two great chances for the equalizer – as a Brandon Smith shot in the box missed just high in the 77th minute and Tyler Sharp ripped a sitter in the box just above the crossbar in the 81st minute – with the Yotes unable to take advantage of two corner kicks in the final three minutes.
Joe White made four saves to earn the win in goal for WPC, with Billings making three saves in the loss for C of I.
The Yotes close out their home schedule on Sunday, hosting Eastern Oregon at Noon, the final contest at Simplot Stadium for nine senior student-athletes.
