Yotes Outlast No. 9 Southern Oregon in Double OT

Box Score

ASHLAND, Ore. – The College of Idaho outscored No. 9 ranked Southern Oregon 20-11 in a second overtime period, as the Coyotes outlasted the host Raiders, 109-100, at Bob Riehm Arena.

The victory for the No. 14 ranked Yotes (17-5, 8-2 CCC) was their eighth in nine games – withstanding a long buzzer-beating three-pointer that sent the game into a second extra session. It was C of I's first two-overtime game since the 2005-06 season and their first win in double overtime since November 2004.

The Raiders (17-5, 6-4) erased a 12-point halftime deficit, taking an 80-79 lead inside the final two minutes on an Eric Thompson lay-up. Demetrius Perkins answered for the Yotes, making 1-of-2 free throws to tie the score, with C of I using a stifling defense to hold SOU without a shot attempt in the final 10 seconds to send the game to the first extra session.

The Coyotes used a 5-0 run midway through the overtime to build a three-point lead, but Kyle Tedder canned an off-balanced 25-foot triple at the buzzer to force a second extra stanza.

C of I never trailed in the final frame – as Perkins drained a three and Sydney Donaldson drove to the bucket for a pair to give the Yotes a 94-89 lead. SOU got within 98-94, but a hard foul and subsequent technical on Tedder gave C of I four free throws, which they connected on – followed by a steal and basket by Josh Wilson that put the game away.

SOU used an early 10-2 run to grab a 14-7 lead early on, but the Yotes countered with an 18-4 run, as Wilson scored seven of his season-high 21 points in the spurt, as C of I took a 45-33 lead to the break. The junior added eight rebounds, six assists, and five steals in the victory.

The win for the Coyotes avenged a 100-99 overtime loss at Southern last season and completed a series sweep of the Raiders.

Perkins scored 19 points, making 12-of-14 free throw attempts, with Donaldson adding 18 points. Taylor Pruett had 16 points and 13 rebounds – including a big three-pointer late in regulation. The Coyotes held a 53-48 edge on the glass and tied a season-high with 33 made free throws.

The game also featured the return of forward Antonio Garrett, who missed the past 14 games due to injury. The senior scored seven points and added three rebounds off the bench.

David Sturner led SOU with 23 points and 12 rebounds, with Tedder scoring 16, and both Thompson and Dex Daum 15. Jeff Bush had six points and 14 assists for the Raiders – who lost despite making 16 three-pointers.

C of I returns to action tomorrow night at Oregon Tech – as Owls head coach Dan Miles looks for his 1,000th-career victory.
