Lady Yotes Drop Two to Top-5 Teams

LA MIRADA, Calif. - The College of Idaho opened up play at the 2012 Red Lion Hotel-Anaheim Summer Slam with a pair of three-set losses, one to No. 2 ranked Concordia-Irvine and a second to No. 5 ranked Biola University.

In the opener, the defending NAIA national runner-up jumped out to quick leads in the first two sets and rolled to a 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 victory over the Yotes, while in Match 2, Biola avenged a loss to The C of I last season with a 25-19, 25-17, 25-21 victory.
 
In Match 1, All-American outside Brooke Marino had 11 kills, with middle Maddy Ekis adding 10 kills and four blocks to lead the undefeated Eagles (5-0).
 
Set 1 saw CUI get three early kills from Le Mi to jump out to a 14-7 lead, closing the set by scoring 10 of the final 13 points.  The Yotes stayed close early in the middle set, as a combo-block from Liz Myers and Sierra Porter got C of I with 7-6.  The Eagles would extend the lead to 22-14 on one of three aces by Marino, before the Lady Yotes used a spirited comeback to draw within 24-21 on a Elisa Brochado kill, but could not hold off the Eagles.
 
Set 3 saw six ties early on, with an Ekis hitting error drawing The C of I within 11-10.  However, four Ekis kills in an 8-1 push broke open the match for CUI.
 
Reanna Schelhaas had seven kills and five blocks for the victors, with Liz Younglove adding 17 assists and seven digs.  The Lady Yotes were held to just 22 kills in the loss, with Torrey Hulsey leading the way with seven kills.  Myers had four kills and a match-high eight blocks, while Jessica Peacock had four kills, eight digs, and five blocks.  Kelsey Soos recorded 13 assists to lead the Yotes.
 
In Match 2, Christine Douglas recorded 12 kills and Amy Weststeyn added 10 kills and five block to lead the Eagles (5-1) to the straight-set win.

Biola got a pair of Chelsea Arnitz aces and took advantage of three C of I errors in a 7-0 run to break a 8-8 tie in Set 1, rolling to the win, while Weststeyn had two kills in an opening 7-1 run in Set 2 as the Eagles took a quick two sets to none lead.

Set 3 saw the Yotes get into system quickly, jumping out to a 5-1 lead and holding a margin of 11-6 on a Peacock ace.  However, BU rattled off five straight points to even the match, and after six tie scores, the Eagles used a four-point push to take control of the set and win the match.

Kylee Nawahine led the way with nine kills and eight digs for the Yotes, with Sofia Anxo adding seven kills and eight digs.  Sierra Porter had a game-high 18 assists, with Janel Porter adding 13 digs.

The Lady Yotes return to action tomorrow with matches at 2:30 p.m. against William Jessup and 6:30 p.m. against Cal State San Marcos.
