SALEM, Ore. - The College of Idaho rallied from four points down in the second set and closed the fifth at the net Friday night, beating Corban 20-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-19, 15-13 at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
The Yotes stayed unbeaten at 12-0 and improved to 5-0 in conference play.
Corban took the opener behind a late push, scoring five of the last six points as Kendra Bittle ended it with a kill. The second set looked like more of the same. Corban led 24-20 and had four chances to go up two sets, but the Yotes scored the final six points of the set. Jessica Stires had two kills in the run, Shaynee McWilliams added one of her own between assists, and Cooper Nave served an ace on set point to end it 26-24.
The third set turned over 11 ties and seven lead changes before Corban closed it on a Yote service error. Corban then jumped out 6-1 in the fourth, but the Yotes answered with their own four-point run and took the set 25-19 while holding Corban to eight kills on 45 swings, a .022 clip.
The fifth stayed tight through 11. Tied there, the Yotes got three straight stops at the net: a block by McWilliams and Abigail Flerchinger, then two more by Stires and Flerchinger to lead 14-11. Corban scratched back within a point before Flerchinger put down the match-ender from McWilliams.
Stires led the Yotes with 22 kills on .372 hitting. Flerchinger added 14 kills at .333 and a match-high 5.0 blocks, and Alexa Wheeler hit .316 with 10 kills. McWilliams ran the offense for 57 assists and added 17 digs and two aces. Avery Lewis also had 17 digs. The Yotes hit .211 as a team and finished with a 10.0 to 8.0 edge in blocks.
Emma Bischoff paced Corban with 23 kills and 16 digs, though she needed 68 attempts to get there. Bittle hit .306 with 16 kills and four aces, and Greta Van Gemert added 12. Corban hit .174 for the match and was outscored 83-74 in total points.
