VANCOUVER, B.C. — The College of Idaho dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader to the RV University of British Columbia, falling 6-3 in Game 1 and 8-0 in Game 2 at Tourmaline Stadium.
With the results, C of I moves to 23-16 overall and 14-14 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
In the opener, the Yotes jumped out to an early lead, plating runs in the first and second innings. An Austin Moon sacrifice fly brought home the first run, and James Hull followed with an RBI single in the second to give C of I a 2-0 advantage.
The Thunderbirds responded behind the long ball and timely hitting. Kellen Bourne cut the deficit in half with a solo home run in the second before the T-Birds took the lead for good in the fourth, capitalizing on productive outs to go in front 3-2.
British Columbia gradually pulled away, adding runs in the sixth and a key two-run single from Jordan Stewart in the seventh to extend the lead to 6-2.
The Yotes threatened late, trimming the deficit to 6-3 in the eighth inning on an RBI double from Corbin Sterner, but could not complete the comeback.
C of I tallied eight hits in the contest, with Hull and Darren Smith each recording two-hit performances.
Game 2 saw the Thunderbirds carry their momentum into a dominant performance on both sides of the ball.
British Columbia opened the scoring in the first inning on a sacrifice fly and broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Lou Fujiwara. The T-Birds added three more runs in the sixth to stretch the lead to 8-0.
The Yotes were limited offensively, managing just five hits and putting few sustained threats together against UBC starter Myles Chamberlain, who tossed seven shutout innings.
Austin Moon, Caden Casagrande, Darren Smith, Brandon Faire, and Pete Bacon each recorded a hit for C of I, but the Yotes were unable to capitalize with runners on base.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series Sunday with the finale scheduled for noon MT.
