Yotes Split Saturday Doubleheader with Oregon Tech

CALDWELL, Idaho - The College of Idaho baseball team opened its weekend series with a doubleheader split against the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech on Saturday at Wolfe Field. The Yotes controlled the opener behind timely hitting and strong pitching to earn a 7-2 victory before Oregon Tech responded with a big offensive showing in Game 2 to take a 14-4 decision. The two teams will conclude the series Sunday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.

Game 1: Yotes 7, Oregon Tech 2

The College of Idaho jumped on Oregon Tech quickly with a four-run first inning and never trailed. After a leadoff walk to James Hull and a single from Cody Guy, Darren Smith opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly. Jack Ryan followed with an RBI groundout to bring in Guy, and Corbin Sterner capped the inning with a two-run single to left field to make it 4-0.

The Owls answered with two runs in the third inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly from Andrew Sharp and an RBI single by Dylan Edwards, but starter Jackson Cummins settled in from there. Cummins worked seven innings, allowing just five hits and two runs while striking out four.

Sterner extended the lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run, his fourth RBI of the day, pushing the Yotes' advantage to 5-2. In the eighth, the Yotes added insurance when Ryan delivered a sacrifice fly to score Skye Palmer, and Sterner drove in another run with a single down the left field line.

Daniel Kormylo earned his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning as the Yotes secured the 7-2 win. Sterner finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and a home run while Hull and Moon each added hits.

Game 2: Oregon Tech 14, Yotes 4

The nightcap opened with both teams scoring early, but Oregon Tech's offense surged ahead with multiple big innings. After the Owls took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Yotes responded with two runs of their own. Cody Guy singled and later scored on a base hit by Caden Casagrande. Connor Olsen followed with an RBI single to left field that plated Bryce Mahlke, giving the Yotes a 2-1 advantage.

Oregon Tech reclaimed the lead in the third when Andrew Sharp hit a two-run home run. The Owls then broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning. Sharp delivered a two-run single before a series of defensive miscues allowed three more runs to score, increasing the deficit to 8-2.

The Owls continued their offensive pressure in the sixth with four more runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Dylan Edwards and another two-run single from Thomas Smith. The Yotes cut into the lead in the fifth inning on an RBI double down the right field line by Austin Moon, scoring Logan Dreher to make it 8-3. Guy later added a solo home run in the seventh, his second RBI of the day.

Oregon Tech added two more unearned runs in the eighth to reach the final margin of 14-4. Moon went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Guy finished with two hits and two runs scored. The Yotes totaled nine hits but were undone by six errors and Oregon Tech's 13-hit performance.

The College of Idaho and Oregon Tech resume the series Sunday with a doubleheader at Wolfe Field beginning at 11 a.m. MT.
