SPOKANE, Wash. - The College of Idaho women's tennis team dropped a closely contested match at Whitworth on Saturday, falling 4-3 at the Scotford Tennis Courts.
The Yotes (5-9) opened the match with a strong doubles performance. Whitworth took the No. 3 doubles point 6-2 over Alyssa Johnson and Adele Long, but the Yotes responded by claiming the No. 1 doubles match 6-4 (Hristina Ljuba and Nicole Tran) and the No. 2 doubles match 7-5 (Kinsey Lockhart and Lina Boylan), giving College of Idaho an early 2-1 lead in the team standings.
In singles, Whitworth battled back to claim the overall victory. Boylan picked up a win at No. 1 singles, defeating Paige Oliver 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, while Ljuba fell in a three-set thriller at No. 2, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 to Faith Kert. Adele Long dropped a hard-fought No. 3 singles match 7-5, 6-4, and Lockhart fell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4.
The match came down to the final courts. Johnson lost in three sets at No. 5, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, but Elizabeth Sagehorn secured a straight-set victory at No. 6, 6-4, 6-1, for the Yotes' third point of the day. Whitworth's wins at No. 2, 3, 4, and 5 singles sealed the 4-3 team win.
