SALEM, Ore. — The College of Idaho opened Friday's doubleheader with a seven-run third inning to claim an 8-7 victory over Corban University before the Warriors responded with a 5-2 win in the nightcap at Roto Rooter Park. The split moved the Yotes to 11-3 on the season and 3-2 in Cascade Conference play heading into Saturday's rematch twinbill scheduled for noon Mountain Time.
Game 1: The College of Idaho 8, Corban 7
The Yotes blew the game open with a seven-run surge in the third. After Evan Brown reached, James Hull singled and Cody Guy followed with an infield hit to load the bases. Darren Smith drove in the tying run with a single to right, and Austin Moon added a two-run single through the left side. Caden Casagrande punched an RBI single, and Connor Olsen delivered an RBI double down the line before later scoring on a balk. Hull capped the outburst with a run-scoring single to right, giving the Yotes a 7-1 lead.
In the ninth, Smith's RBI double to center added a crucial insurance run. Corban rallied late, but Jack Ryan made the move from center field to pitching to close the door for the save. Starter Jackson Cummins worked six innings to earn the win, with Willy Shirts contributing two steady innings in relief.
Moon finished with four hits and two RBI, while Smith added two RBI, including the key ninth-inning double. Hull reached base three times with two hits and a walk, and both Casagrande and Olsen provided run-scoring hits during the decisive third inning.
Game 2: Corban 5, The College of Idaho 2
Corban capitalized early, building a three-run lead across the first three innings. The Yotes broke through in the sixth when Casagrande singled home Guy. In the seventh, Hull's sacrifice fly scored Jace Mahlke to cut the margin to 5-2.
Kayden Sandow kept The College of Idaho within reach, tossing three scoreless innings to finish the game and allowing just one hit.
Guy doubled and scored, Casagrande recorded two hits with an RBI, and Hull drove in his second run of the day with a deep fly to center. The Yotes totaled six hits in the nightcap.
The College of Idaho and Corban will conclude the weekend with another doubleheader Saturday at noon Mountain Time.
