CALDWELL, Idaho - The College of Idaho football team celebrated Homecoming in style, rolling to a 38-16 victory over Montana State-Northern on Saturday at Simplot Stadium.
The Yotes (3-0) came out sharp after their bye week, opening the game with a Josh Horn field goal and building a 24-3 lead by halftime. With the win, C of I remains the only undefeated team in the Frontier West Division.
Ryken EchoHawk sparked the ground game with 90 yards on just seven carries, including a 28-yard touchdown. Running back Rylie Byington added two short rushing scores and also caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chase Vehmeyer. Byington finished with 84 total yards.
Quarterbacks Caden Young and Vehmeyer combined to throw for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Young connected with Corban Freese for a first-quarter score, while Vehmeyer's 28-yard strike to Byington capped the Yotes' third-quarter surge.
In all, C of I piled up 519 yards of offense, including 292 on the ground. Trey Gibson (59 yards) and Young (55 yards) added big runs to keep the chains moving.
Defensively, the Yotes limited MSU-Northern to negative-five yards rushing and just 218 yards of total offense. Tucker French recorded 1.5 sacks, while Matthew Iwamizu and Willie White combined for key stops in the backfield.
The Lights (0-3) managed two second-half touchdown passes from Kendall O'Neill to receiver Isaiah Woodley, who finished with 95 yards.
College of Idaho will look to keep its unbeaten run alive on the road next weekend.
