Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ryan Elsberry

Yotes Battle to the Buzzer Against No. 4 Raiders.

ASHLAND, Ore. – In a game defined by intensity, dramatic lead changes, and surging runs, the College of Idaho women's basketball team gave the undefeated No. 4 Southern Oregon Raiders their biggest scare of the season before falling 58-51 at Lithia Motors Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

The Yotes came out blazing, shocking the Raiders with an 11-0 start powered by the sharpshooting Anna Mooney, who drained back-to-back three-pointers. Brooke Beresford, a defensive and offensive juggernaut, added a three-pointer and key rebounds to keep the momentum firmly on College of Idaho's side. By the end of the first quarter, the Yotes led 19-7, stunning the crowd and the top-ranked Raiders.

Southern Oregon clawed back in the second quarter behind Morgan Baird's inside presence and Bridgette McIntyre's perimeter shooting. Despite this surge, the Yotes showed resilience, with McKenzie Hirsch delivering a clutch layup and free throw to maintain their lead, heading into halftime up 31-24.

The third quarter became a defensive chess match, with both teams grinding for points. Beresford's relentless effort on the boards stood out, but the Yotes struggled offensively, scoring just four points in the period. Southern Oregon seized the opportunity to erase the deficit, tying the game 33-33 by quarter's end.

The final quarter was nothing short of a thriller. Mia Austin nailed a crucial three-pointer to tie the game at 40-40, igniting hope for the Yotes faithful. Beresford and Hirsch kept the Yotes in the fight with key buckets, but Southern Oregon's composure at the free-throw line proved to be the difference. The Raiders sealed the game in the final minute, extending their unbeaten streak to 19-0.

Beresford led the Yotes with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Mooney added eight points, including two timely three-pointers. Austin provided a spark off the bench with eight points of her own, showcasing her range and energy.

Despite the loss, the Yotes showcased their grit and determination against one of the nation's best. The Yotes (10-9, 8-6 CCC) will look to bounce back next week as they continue their road stretch, taking on Bushnell University in Eugene, Oregon, on January 31st. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 pm MT.
