NAMPA, Idaho – No. 24 (NCAA Division II) Northwest Nazarene University swept a doubleheader against No. 13 (NAIA) College of Idaho on Tuesday afternoon. The two local rivals had not met since the 2019 campaign when the two teams split a doubleheader in Caldwell. On this day, it was the Nighthawks who came away with an 8-5 win in game one and 9-2 win in game two.
College of Idaho (5-5) had five hits in game one and six in game two compared to a nine and 13-hit attack for Northwest Nazarene in the doubleheader sweep.
The first contest saw College of Idaho plate the first three runs of the game, two of which came on the first of two home runs by
Madelyn Powell. The sophomore hit a solo home run in the ninth for her third multi-home run game of her young career. Teammate
Lena Zahniser had her second multi-hit game of her career as the two accounted for four of the five hits by the Yotes.
Down 3-0, NNU took its first lead on the day with a four-run third inning and added to its lead with four more in the fourth to take an 8-4 lead on the Yotes. Emma Bumtay and Jami Obringer each had two hits to lead the nine-hit attack. Keana Bell, Abigail Gagnon and Obringer each had two RBI in the win. Sidney Booth pitched a complete game and struck out six for the win.
The second contest saw
Lolo Walker lead the Yotes with two of the six hits but it was a 13-hit effort by the Nighthawks as they plated five in the first inning on its way to the 9-2 win.
Brinley Iverson and
Ysabella Villegas each had a RBI in the loss for College of Idaho. In the circle for NNU, Charlotte Forniss went the distance to pick up the win. Also, for the Nighthawks, Clarissa Moreno had three hits to lead the offensive for NNU, who improves to 6-1.
