Box Score 2 CALDWELL, Idaho - The Yotes baseball team dropped the first contest on Saturday by a score of 6-4, before taking the final game of the series in dominant fashion against NCAA DII Northwest Nazarene.
Game One
The Yotes were led by multi-hit games from
Tristen Garland,
Jonah Hultberg, and
Alex McFarland-Smith, tallying seven of the Yotes 10 hits in the contest. The first of McFarland-Smith's hits came in the very first inning, blasting a ball over the left field wall for his first homer of the year, giving the Yotes a quick 2-0 lead. NNU would answer right back, scoring four in the second inning on a pair of walks, a fielder's choice, and a wild pitch.
The first of Hultberg's hits on the game came in the second inning, doubling to right field, scoring
Ben Hansen and
Jordan Kelly, tying the game at four. Neither team would score again until the seventh inning, as Matthew Reynolds hit a sacrifice fly and Kaden Miller hit a double, giving NNU a 6-4 lead, which they would hold to be the final score.
The Yotes would hold NNU with just one hit for a majority of the contest. The Nighthawks registered a hit in the first inning, not tallying another hit until the sixth, despite scoring four runs in the second inning. Henry Clark earned his first win of the season, while
Kirby Robertson's record dropped to 1-1 in the loss.
Game Two
The second game of the doubleheader was all about the Yotes offense, led by multi-hit performances from Hultberg,
Skyler Sadora, and McFarland-Smith, tallying seven of the eight Yote hits. McFarland-Smith drove in the first three Yote runs, the first coming on a two run triple to center field, scoring Sadora and Hultberg. He then drove in a run via an NNU error in the third inning as the team jumped out to a three-run lead after three innings.
The fifth and sixth innings saw the Yotes jump out to an 11 run lead. In the fifth,
Tristen Garland scored on a wild pitch, while Sadora had scored on an error. In hte sixth, the Yotes saw four runs score on four straight hits, , while also scoring a pair of runs on a couple of NNU errors.
NNU was finally able to break the shutout in the top of the ninth inning, scoring three runs with two outs in the inning. The first came on an Austin Thomason double which scored a pair, and Manny Casillas singled which scored Thomason, as the game would end in an 11-3 College of Idaho win.
Kris Kirkpatrick raised his record to 2-0 on the year, going five and two-thirds innings while only allowing two hits and striking out a pair. Spencer Schwehr dropped his record to 0-2, going four and a third while allowing four hits and five runs while striking out six.
The Yotes will be back in action next weekend against No. 2 Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston in a non-conference series.
