CALDWELL, Idaho – No. 8 College of Idaho had a lot to celebrate on Senior Day as a trio of seniors and a stingy defense came together in a 42-38 win over Eastern Oregon on Saturday.
College of Idaho (8-1, 7-1 Frontier) quarterback
Andy Peters and wide receiver
Jon Schofield, who were part of Senior Day festivities prior to the game, added to their record-setting seasons. Peters moved into sole possession of the single-season touchdown mark with a career-high and record-setting five touchdown passes.
For the season, Peters has thrown 25 touchdowns passes to eclipse the previous mark of 21 and his five touchdowns passes broke the previous mark of four that has been held since Max Leonard did so in 1961 against Whitman.
Two of his favorite targets were
Jon Schofield and
Brock Richardson. Schofield caught a touchdown and threw for his first in the win. He caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from Peters that put College of Idaho ahead 7-0 in the first quarter. The touchdown reception by Schofield was his tenth receiving touchdown of the season to set a new program single-season mark.
Later in the game, in the second quarter, in the wildcat formation nearly everyone including the EOU defense thought Schofield would call his own number on first and goal. The Las Vegas, Nevada native surprised everyone with the jump pass as he ran up to the line before finding an open
Ben Hruby for the one-yard touchdown pass that put the Yotes ahead 21-14.
After a pair of touchdown passes by Peters and the touchdown pass by Schofield, EOU scored just before halftime as the two teams went into halftime tied at 21.
The second half, like the first half was full of fireworks, by the offense for both teams.
EOU regained the lead on its first drive of the second half after they forced a Yotes fumble. The visiting Mountaineers worked its way down the field before settling for a 22-yard field goal for a 24-21 lead. Then, the two teams traded punts before Peters caught fire both with his arm and legs.
Three-straight drives Peters connected with teammate
Brock Richardson for touchdown passes. The last Yote with three touchdown receptions in a game was Marcus Lenhardt on October 27, 2015 against Rocky Mountain.
After the third touchdown connection between Peters and Richardson put College of Idaho ahead 42-38 with 3:18 left in regulation, it was time for the defense to make its mark in the game. The stingy defense overcame a 4th and 16 conversion that moved the ball into C of I territory as they forced five-straight incompletions to seal the win.
In the win for College of Idaho, Peters completed 16 of 25 passes for 219 yards and five touchdowns. He also had 14 carries for 101 yards for his third 100-yard games on the season.
Hunter Gilbert and
Allamar Alexander added 69 and 55 yards on the ground, respectively. Richardson and Schofield had 87 and 83 yards receiving, respectively.
Chase Brown led the Yotes defense with 10 tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss.
Eastern Oregon quarterback Quincy Glasper completed 27 of 40 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Malachi Spencer, who hauled in 13 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown.
The regular season finale awaits the Yotes as they will travel to Ashland, Ore. on Nov. 11 for a rematch against Southern Oregon on Sept. 2 in Caldwell. In the contest, College of Idaho defeated the Raiders, 42-16.
