No. 13 College of Idaho completed its opening weekend with its third-straight doubleheader sweep on Sunday, defeating Benedictine-Mesa, 8-0 and 13-2. The recipe for success continues to be potent hitting and solid pitching for College of Idaho.Â
In the two games, College of Idaho had 27 hits and allowed just six to the Redhawks.
Kaylee MacDannald paced the offense with two hits in game one and three more in the nightcap.Â
Game one starter
Hannah McNerney allowed just an infield single to start the bottom of the first and struck out seven for her third win of the season. Game two starter
Katelyn Wilfert picked up where McNerney left off, allowing five hits and struck out nine to raise her record to 3-0. The win by Wilfert moves her into sixth all-time in program history in career wins.
Game 1
A three-run first inning by College of Idaho to lead off the doubleheader led the visiting Yotes to an 8-0 win over the Redhawks. In the inning, McDannald hit a two-run home run to spark the attack.
Leadoff batter Haley Loffer became the third player in program history with two triples in a game and first since Jodie Hoagland on April 1, 2015 against EOU. Â
College of Idaho added to its lead, scoring four times on three hits in the fourth inning. In the inning, the Yotes got two of the runs on the first career home run by
Madelyn Powell. A solo home run by Loffer in the fifth put the finishing touches on the victory.
In the circle, McNerney struck out the side in the fourth and allowed just one hit to get the win and career win No. 46.Â
Game 2
The College of Idaho posted a season-high 13 runs on 15 hits on its way to a 13-2 win over the Redhawks to complete the doubleheader sweep. The Yotes scored in five of the six innings with a five-run sixth and three each in the first and third.Â
Three runs on four hits to start the game provided College of Idaho an early lead in the first. A RBI groundout by Loffer in the second inning stretched the lead to 4-0. Then, it was the second three-run inning in the third that stretched the lead to 7-0. Benedictine-Mesa ended the shutout bid, scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth. The two teams each plated a run in the fifth before College of Idaho scored five more in the sixth on four hits for the final margin.
College of Idaho ends the opening weekend with a 6-0 mark for the first time since the 2019 season. Next, the Yotes will travel to California to face Menlo and Jessup before beginning Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
