Caldwell, Idaho - The College of Idaho baseball team extended its winning streak to five with a doubleheader sweep of Whitman, winning game one by a 6-5 margin and taking the nightcap, 13-1 at Wolfe Field on Sunday.
Â
The Yotes (9-3), who also picked up its first weekend sweep since the end of the regular season in 2016 against Simpson. The Blues drop to 0-6 on the season with the sweep in the twinbill.
Â
Sunday's first game saw the C of I comeback from a 4-3 deficit to plate three runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to the 6-5 win over the Blues. The big blow for the Yotes was a two-RBI single by
Skyler Sadora, plus
Kirby Robertson brought in a run after a miscue by the Blues in the inning. For the game,
Trevor Watkins had two hits and two RBI to go along with two hits from
Weston Miller. Relievers
Erik Wisenor and
Luke Brewer pitched the final 3.2 innings in relief of starter
Ben Gaff. Wisenor tossed 2.2 innings of three-hit relief and struck out one as he picked up his first win as a Yote and Brewer pitched a scoreless ninth with a pair of strikeouts for the save.
Â
The nightcap saw a return of the potent bats in the C of I dugout as they pounded out 12 hits and scored 13 runs for the Yotes as they had their eighth double-digit hit game of the season and seventh game where they scored double-digit runs. After seeing his season-opening nine-game hitting streak end in game one,
Jonah Hultberg came back with a 3-for-4 effort with two runs scored. It was the seventh multi-hit game of the season for junior second baseman Boise. The offense was just not Hultberg as
Tristen Garland,
Ben Dudley and
Jake Denison each had two hits. Garland drove in three, plus Dudley and Denison each drove in a pair for the winning efforts.
Â
Not only was the offense explosive, C of I starting pitcher
Kirby Robertson (pictured)Â raised his record to 2-1 with a six inning and nine strikeout effort. The nine strikeouts are the most by a Yotes pitcher since
Connor Root fanned nine against Central Washington earlier this season on February 5. Three different relievers –
Andrew Vaughn,
Kyle McPeak and
Tanner Keener – each pitched an inning to close out the game.  Â
Â
Next, the Yotes will put its five-game winning streak on the line against local rival for a four-game series against NCAA Division II World Series participant, Northwest Nazarene. The series gets underway with a single game at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Wolfe Field.
