Coyotes and Arizona Christian Split Saturday Twinbill

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Tanner Higgins delivered a go-ahead 2-out RBI double in the seventh inning, helping The College of Idaho salvage Game 2 of a doubleheader at Arizona Christian.

The Yotes (2-2) dropped the opener 6-2, but battled back in the late innings to steal a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

C of I trailed 4-2 after four innings in Game 2, but pulled even in the fifth inning on a Makayla Frias RBI single. Two innings later, Kylie Smith singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Higgins followed with the RBI double to give the visitors the lead. Hannah McNerney worked a 1-2-3 bottom of seventh to pick up the win.

Higgins finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, with Smith going 2-for-4 with three runs scored. McNerney struck out five in a complete game effort.

Game 1 got away from C of I in the first inning – as Claire Bailey led off the first inning with a homer and Kirsten Garcia followed with a 2-run blast – giving the Firestorm (1-1) at 4-0 lead.

The Yotes cut the gap to 4-2 in the fourth on a Higgins sacrifice fly and a Hattie Hruza double, but did not push another runner into scoring position the rest of the game.

Savannah Smith handcuffed C of I, holding the Yotes to just four hits and striking out five.

C of I closes out the road trip tomorrow morning with a 10 a.m. match-up at Benedictine Mesa.
