MESA, Ariz. –
Kaily Christensen led a prolific offensive day by the College of Idaho, going a combined 6-for-7 with six RBI, leading the Yotes to a doubleheader sweep of Benedictine Mesa at Seton Catholic Prep High.
The Yotes (4-2) opened the day with a 6-3 win and rode a 12-run second inning to a 17-3 victory in the weekend finale.
The 17 runs in Game 2 was the sixth time the Coyotes have scored 17-or-more runs in a game and the most runs in a game since 2013. The 12-run inning equaled the second-most runs in an inning in program history and most in a frame since 2007.
In the opener, C of I jumped out to a 5-0 lead after an inning and a half – paced by a 4-run second inning outburst.
Alyssa Goff slapped an RBI single,
Kaylee MacDannald added a run-scoring double and Christensen blasted a 2-run homer.
It was enough offense for the tandem of
Annie Polster and
Hannah McNerney – as Polster tossed five strong innings, allowing just two earned runs and struck out five for the win. McNerney logged her second save of the season, retiring 6-of-7 batters.
Christensen went 3-for-4 in the Game 1 win, MacDannald was 2-for-3 and Lexi Navarette had a pair of doubles and a RBI.
The Redhawks (0-2) had no answer for the Coyote offense in Game 2 – as a
Tanner Higgins 2-run single in the first giving the visitors a 3-0 lead. An inning later, C of I sent 17 batters to the plate – taking advantage of two walks, a hit by pitch, an error and eight hits for their highest scoring inning since plating 12 in a road win at Menlo.
Christensen had a pair of doubles in the inning – one a bases-clearing 2-base hit – while MacDannald launched a grand slam home run.
Freshman
Ambrie Jones went the distance for her first collegiate win, allowing three runs and striking out four.
Christensen and
Hannah Mikel each had a 3-hit games, with MacDannald, Higgins, Navarette and McNerney all going 2-for-2 in the win.
The Coyotes will have next two weekends off before traveling to the Bay Area for six games – meeting Menlo, William Jessup and Antelope Valley.
