WADDEL, Ariz. –
Jonah Hultberg finished a triple shy of the cycle and
Kirby Robertson tossed five strong innings on the mound, as The College of Idaho closed out their season opening trip to the desert with a 9-7 win over San Diego Christian.
Hultberg went 3-for-5 with three runs scored – recording a single, double and home run – as the Coyotes (3-1) are off to their best start since 2016.
The junior opened the game with a double and scored on a Robertson fielders' choice. An inning later, the Yotes loaded the bases with 2-out, benefiting from a dropped fly ball in center to plate all three runner.
The lead would grow to 8-0 in the fourth, as Hultberg lined a solo homer and
Alex McFarland-Smith ripped a 2-run double.
Robertson did the rest, allowing just two runs on three hits in five innings, striking out four.
The Hawks (2-4) cut the margin to 9-7 in the eighth on the second of two Alec Arnone home runs. However,
Erik Wisenor closed it out, tossing a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save in as many days.
McFarland-Smith went 2-for-3 in the win for the Coyotes, who return home next weekend for a 4-game series at Wolfe Field against Central Washington.
