2021 Women's Soccer Notebook (Week 2)

COMING UP: at Whitman, Saturday, 7:30 p.m. PT

COMPLETE MEDIA GAME NOTES

GAME COVERAGE: Whitman is not planning to offer Live Stats of the game on Saturday, as the Blues are using the contest as an exhibition. There is a possibility that Live Video will be provided by the host school on the NWC Network.

ABOUT WHITMAN: The Blues went 0-7 in the spring season and were outscored by the opposition 18-0 on the campaign. Whitman last won a game on Sept. 25, 2019. A total of 11 new faces have been added to the roster, which should give the program a new look. Sophomores Hanna Lynch (1.74 GAA) and Emily Badgley (3.43 GAA) split time in the keeper position a year ago and both return for the fall. Junior Riley Glendinning registered three goals and 19 shots on frame in 2019 to finish second on the team in goals.

RECENT TRENDS AGAINST THE BLUES: The Yotes have won four straight matches against Whitman dating back to 2006, including three victories in a row in Walla Walla.

SEASON OPENERS: C of I is 13-17-1 all-time in season openers, including a 10-6 mark in openers that take place on the road.

C OF I PICKED THIRD: The College of Idaho was picked to finish third in the Cascade Conference Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll for the upcoming season. A total of 24 players return for the CCC East Division winners, including nine starters and three All-Conference selections. By winning the division this spring, the Yotes advanced to the NAIA National Championships for the first time in program history. Eastern Oregon received nine of the 13 first-place votes in the poll to take home 164 points. The Mountaineers top the preseason poll, followed by Oregon Tech with 154 points and two first-place votes. C of I occupied the third spot in the rankings with 131 points and one first-place vote, while Corban had 120 points and one first-place vote. Northwest rounded out the top-five with 115 points.

YOTES BATTLE DIVISION I BRONCOS IN EXHIBITION: Last week C of I played Boise State tough in an exhibition, with the Yotes keeping the tally even at 1-1 until a late goal by BSU in the 76th minute broke the draw. Junior Payton Mongelli scored the goal for the Yotes in the 56th minute from the right corner of the 10-yard box on a shot that deflected off a Bronco defender into the net.

BACK AT ONE: After the Cascade Conference featured an East and West division this spring, the CCC has gone back to one league for the fall season. In the spring, C of I claimed the East and Oregon Tech won the West, with East runner-up Eastern Oregon joining the pair as a representative at nationals.

ON THE ROAD: The Yotes will not play a home game at Simplot Stadium until Corban comes to town on Sept. 24, with C of I taking part in six true road matches and one neutral site contest over the first month of the campaign.

WINNING SEASONS: C of I has posted three straight winning records dating back to the beginning of 2018. Since 2014, the program has finished with a winning record in six of seven seasons.

LEADING THE YOTES: Head coach Brian Smith is getting set to begin his 10th season leading the women's soccer program at C of I. Smith is the winningest coach in program history with 68 victories over that time span and was honored as the CCC Coach of the Year this spring. Smith is joined by returners Taylor Bodily, Megan Renaldo and Gerry Scheetz on staff, with newcomer Shelby Nicoletti joining the group.

RECEIVING VOTES AGAIN: For the fourth poll in a row, C of I received votes in the most recent NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll, which was released prior to the season getting underway. The last time the program was ranked was Oct. 5, 2010 when the Yotes found themselves at the No. 20 spot in the poll.

MEDIA DAY PHOTO GALLERY: Women's soccer recently took part in a media day with the C of I Athletic Communications staff. Photos from that day are now available on YoteAthletics.com.

SEASON TICKETS: Season tickets for all College of Idaho men's and women's soccer home games are on sale now! For just $25 for an individual or $60 per family, you can catch all the action at Simplot Stadium.
