CALDWELL, Idaho – A five-goal second half sparked The College of Idaho to a 6-0 win on Monday over Providence.
The six goals marked the most for the Yotes (3-2-1, 2-0 CCC) in women's soccer program history at Simplot Stadium, with a 15-goal effort back in 1993 against Western Baptist at Symms Field the high-mark for goals in a home match.
C of I took a 1-0 lead into the break after
Brooklyn Ruwe converted on a header off a
Chloe Teets corner in the 35th minute.
With a stingy defense in place that held the Argos (0-2, 0-2 CCC) to just one shot for the contest, the Yotes would then unleash the offensive onslaught with a quintet of goals over the next 45 minutes.
For the second day in a row, senior
Cameron Coyle started the second half scoring when
Maddie Smith split two defenders and flicked a ball over to her that she chipped by the keeper on the left side.
Already up 2-0, Smith then got involved with the scoring on her own front in the 55th minute after
Lexie Hibler won the ball twice in a row to get it up to Smith, who did the rest by connecting with her left foot.
In the 68th minute,
Laura Staropoli joined Coyle with her second goal of the week thanks to a beautiful cross through the heart of the defense from
Madison Glascock. Staropoli received the pass in the air and floated her shot over the hands of jumping Providence keeper Dakota Neumann to score her second of the season.
After scoring in the first half, Ruwe blasted another one into the net in the 83rd minute after receiving a perfect pass to the top of the six-yard box from freshman
Ashlyn Graham, who received credit for the assist.
Sydney Clements finished the scoring for the Yotes in the 87th with a goal off of an assist from
Alexa Rierson.
For the match, C of I took 25 shots, including 10 on frame. The Yotes also finished with 12 corner kicks to zero for the Argos.
Shae Waters recorded a shutout in goal for the second day in a row.
The 2-0 start to CCC play marks the first time since the 2015 season that C of I has won the first two matches of league play.
Conference action continues on Mar. 14-15 at Rocky Mountain.
