LEWISTON, Idaho – A career-high 11 kills from freshman
Emily Vandenberg was not enough for The College of Idaho, as rival Lewis-Clark State toppled the Yotes in four sets inside the LCSC Activity Center.
The Warriors (6-5, 6-5 CCC) won despite C of I holding a 49-48 edge in total kills and the Yotes posting nine aces, but LC forced 34 hitting errors and had a match-high 10 total blocks.
LCSC used a 14-3 run to erase a 5-4 lead by the Coyotes (4-9, 4-7) in dominating Set 1, while C of I got a kill and a stuff block from
Cameron Wallace in a 4-0 Set 2 run to build a 17-12 lead in evening the match.
The final two sets were tight – as C of I used a 7-2 run to take a 18-17 lead in Set 3 after consecutive Vandenberg kills – but Tori Edwards led a Warrior surge, smashing back-to-back kills to give the hosts a lead they wouldn't surrender.
Set 4 went back and forth – as
Danielle Neuman ripped a pair of kills in a 5-0 C of I run to give the visitors a 19-17 lead, a margin that would grow to 24-21. However, the Warriors would score the final five points of the match, as Dani Berntsen had two kills and LC added a pair of combo-blocks to complete the win.
Neuman had 11 kills and four blocks and Wallace had eight kills in the loss for C of I.
Abigail Guinn finished with 21 assists,
Chloe Knudson had 21 digs and
Alyssa Espley posted three aces for the Yotes.
Edwards led all players with 13 kills and Jada Wyms had six kills and a match-high seven blocks for LCSC.
The two teams close out the weekend tomorrow with a 5 p.m. (PDT) match-up.
