CALDWELL, Idaho – The College of Idaho brought a late scoring punch in a 2-0 win over Northwest under the lights at Simplot Stadium on Friday.
After both teams had been held scoreless over the first 74 minutes of action, things would change in the 75th minute when the Yotes (1-1-1) found the net first off of a
Payton Mongelli corner kick.
Mongelli placed a beautiful ball that gave the Yotes an initial shot opportunity that was blocked, however
Brynna Herridge capitalized off the rebound with her first goal of the season to give C of I a 1-0 lead.
Later in the half, the Yotes added an insurance goal in the 86th minute thanks to a
Lily Schlake steal on the defensive end that she kicked forward to
Maddie Smith who found
Megan Wilkinson on a perfectly placed ball. Schlake and Smith were each credited with assists on the play, while Wilkinson tallied her first goal.
C of I outshot the Eagles (0-1) by a tally of 12-4, including an 8-0 edge in shots on goal.
Chloe Teets and
Madison Glascock each posted two shots on goal, while
Mackenzie Malach and Teets each fired off three shots total.
Quality defensive play by the Yotes made it possible for the shutout, as keeper
Kylee Atkins did not face a shot on frame all match.
In the win, C of I held an 11-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Yotes return to the pitch on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT at Eastern Washington, which will mark the second Division I opponent of the campaign.
