CALDWELL, Idaho – College of Idaho rounded out the countable portion of the non-conference slate with a physical 53-44 win over Simpson on Saturday night in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
Sienna Riggle led the way for the Yotes (6-3) with her fifth double-double of the season, scoring 13 points with 13 rebounds while blocking a pair of shots.
Taryn Riley had a strong performance from the point guard position, netting 12 points with three rebounds and a pair of pretty assists.
In the first quarter, C of I held Simpson (1-9) to just one made basket from the field, however the Red Hawks tallied eight points from the free throw line to jump ahead 10-8.
The second quarter once again saw the Yotes play stout defense, limiting the visitors to a 2-for-14 clip from the floor as C of I went on to lead 20-18 at the half.
With the game tied at 21 early in the second half, the Yotes put together a 6-0 run to go up 27-21, starting with a
Lexi Mitchell tip-in. Mitchell had another impressive night on the boards with 12 rebounds to go with her nine points.
Simpson fought back to make it 33-31 with 37 seconds left in the third quarter, however a
Mattie Creager reverse layup and a Riley buzzer beater made it 37-31 in favor of C of I entering the final 10 minutes.
The run would continue with a Riley layup in transition on the first possession for the Yotes in the fourth quarter.
C of I built the lead to as large as 14 in the fourth quarter, with multiple players making key impacts off the bench.
Riley Frith had nine rebounds in 18 minutes of action and
Averee Porter had a positive performance on each side of the floor.
Once again, C of I won the rebounding battle, hauling down 49 boards to 35 for the Red Hawks.
The Yotes hit the road next weekend against conference foes Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon on Friday and Saturday.
