CALDWELL, Idaho – College of Idaho capitalized on only one of their 33 shot attempts, while Eastern Oregon found the net on three of their four shots on frame, as the Mountaineers topped the Yotes, 3-1, at Simplot Stadium.
Despite taking 25 of the first 27 shots on the afternoon, the Yotes (5-2, 3-2 CCC) trailed 2-0 – as EOU scored on their only two shot attempts in the first 75 minutes.
C of I peppered the goal early, as a blast from
Kristian Quiros in the fourth minute banged off the left post, while in the 16th minute, the Yotes had three shots in a sequence – all inside the area, but were turned away by the Mountaineers (3-5, 3-2).
EOU broke through at the start of the 18th minute, as Carlos Murillo stole a pass near the center stripe and beat the Coyote defense – slotting a 1-on-1 attempt into the right corner of the net for the lead.
The Yotes had a quality chance in the 58th minute, but a right-footed blast from
Jeremy Guimbretiere clanged off the cross bar.
The Mounties doubled their lead in the 68th minute, as EOU drew a penalty kick after a tackle in the box – with Erick Diaz lining a dart into the left corner of the net.
C of I kept the pressure on, finally breaking through in the 73td minute, as
Liam Kelly played a free kick from 25-yards out to the back post, finding the head of
Emil Powles to cut the lead in half.
The hosts had three cracks at tying the score before EOU put the game away in the 84th minute, as Dawson Heuett played a thru-ball to Angel Rojas, who lined an angled shot into the right corner of the net.
EOU keeper Daulton Mauzay did the rest – making three key saves inside the final five minutes to preserve the win.
C of I had a commanding 33-7 edge in total shots and took all nine corner kicks on the day.
Both teams hit the road to Montana – playing games next weekend at Providence and Rocky Mountain.
