CALDWELL, Idaho – Quality starts from sophomores
Silas Shumate and
Jared Bowman and three hits from
Ryan Nolan were the key for the College of Idaho in the middle games of a 4-game weekend series against Park University Gilbert at Wolfe Field.
C of I (8-20) squandered a late lead in the opener to fall in 10 innings, 4-3, before holding off the Buccaneers for a 3-2 win in Game 2.
Shumate was nearly unhittable in Game 1 – allowing a pair of first inning hits before limiting the Bucs (11-18) to a pair of walks over the next six innings. The righty ended the day with a career-high six strikeouts.
The Yotes built a 3-0 lead through seven innings – plating two in the third, one on a double steal of home and another on a bloop
Carter Vieira RBI double, adding a third run in the fifth on a Nolan sacrifice fly.
Park got even in the eighth – with an Austin Chouniard RBI single capping the 3-run inning. The visitors plated the winning run in the tenth on a seeing-eye Chouniard single – part of a 3-hit game.
Nolan went 2-for-4 in the loss for C of I.
Park grabbed a 1-0 lead in the nightcap on a first inning Hugo Acosta single. C of I took the lead in the third on a two-run
Matthew Clay double – part of a 2-for-4 night. The Yotes would add to the margin in the fifth on a
Jonah Hultberg RBI single.
It would be enough for Bowman, who pitched seven strong innings, walking two and striking out three.
Dimick Wood got the final six outs for his first save of 2020. Clay went 2-for-4 with two RBI, with four others finishing with one hit.
C of I closes out the weekend series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. first-pitch
