ONTARIO, Ore. – Carroll College used a 6-run sixth inning rally to break a 4-4 tie, opening the Cascade Conference softball season with a 13-4 victory over the College of Idaho at the Heinz-OreIda Sports Complex.
The game was initially delayed by 30 minutes at Symms Field in Caldwell due to wet field conditions due to a pipe leak – and eventually moved to Treasure Valley Community College – where the teams played a single game.
The Coyotes (6-5, 0-1 CCC) built a 3-0 lead in the second – as
Haley Loffer lined a 2-run homer over the centerfield wall and following a walk,
Trystin Crofts gapped an RBI triple.
The Fighting Saints (5-2, 1-0) scored a pair of runs in the fourth and added an Allison Williams 2-out, 2-run homer in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. C of I answered in the bottom of the frame, as
Hattie Hruza roped a solo homer to left to tie the score.
Carroll took advantage of four C of I errors in the sixth inning rally – including a pair of 2-out dropped fly balls with the bases loaded that allowed a combined four runs to score. The visitors added three insurance runs in the seventh – including an Amber Brewer 2-run double.
Williams shook off a rocky first two innings to earn the win, throwing a complete game 6-hitter, with Brooke Yarnall recording three of the Fighting Saints 14 hits.
Loffer and Crofts each went 2-for-4 in the loss for the Coyotes – with starter
Hannah McNerney striking out five.
Due to the field conditions in Caldwell, the two teams will play a Saturday doubleheader again at TVCC, beginning at 11 a.m. – with the scheduled non-conference game cancelled.
