CHANDLER, Ariz. – Taylor University clubbed three home runs on the afternoon, spoiling a big day for College of Idaho's
Carter Vieira, as the Trojans swept a twinbill from the Yotes at Snedigar Park.
TU rallied from an early deficit to win Game 1, 13-6, while jumping to a 7-0 lead in Game 2, hanging on for a 10-5 victory.
Vieira went 2-for-4 win the opener – with his two-run single in the second inning giving the Coyotes (0-4) a 3-0 lead.
The Trojans (4-0) scored the next 13 runs – batting around for five runs in the fourth inning, adding three in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth – with T.J. Bass and Ben Kalbaugh each hitting home runs.
C of I got three back in the sixth – two on a Vieira single and another on an
Alec Hopkins base hit – but could not get closer.
Hopkins had two hits in the loss, with pitchers
Micah Ferguson and
Andrew Kirchmeier throwing scoreless innings.
The Indiana Nine batted around in the first inning of Game 2 – plating five runs – with Bass providing the big blow with a 3-run homer.
Trailing 7-0, the Yotes chipped away at the deficit – scoring two on a
Ben Hansen single in the second and Vieira providing a fourth inning sacrifice fly. C of I added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on ground outs from
Ben Dudley and Micah Hultberg to close the scoring.
Hansen was a perfect 3-for-3 in the loss, with Dudley logging two hits – including a triple.
C of I returns home Friday, opening their home schedule with an 11 a.m. doubleheader vs. William Jessup.
