COSTA MESA, Calif. – A challenging non-conference schedule for the College of Idaho concluded on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 loss to No. 11 Vanguard.
The Lions (3-1-0) wasted little time getting on the board with a goal in the sixth minute off the foot of Kelsey Bryant, who was assisted by Kim Benner. Bryant's shot was pushed past the hands of C of I (1-1-2) keeper
Shae Waters, who made a diving effort at the ball to her right.
Vanguard took the first eight shots of the match and would go on to outshoot the Yotes 31-4, including a 14-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Elise Payne was a bright spot for the Yotes after checking in as a substitute in the first half, tallying three shots and finding a hole in the Lions defense in the 38th minute to net the first goal of her college career.
Both teams remained in a stalemate until the 63rd minute when a Marielisa Hallam corner kick led to a Myranda Baca goal, which would ultimately prove to be the difference in the 2-1 victory for the Lions.
Baca had five shots on the day, with a host of her teammates including Karla Navarro, Emily Miramontes, Hallam and Bryant each posting four.
Corner kicks provided Vanguard with plentiful opportunities on the afternoon, with the Lions ending the contest with a 9-1 advantage on corners.
Kylee Atkins finished with seven saves in the second half for C of I and
Shae Waters had four in her half of action, with each yielding one goal.
Sunday marked the first match ever between the Yotes and Vanguard.
C of I will now have a week off from game action prior to beginning conference play on Sept. 20 at Corban.
