Staropoli Nets Birthday Goal in 2-1 Loss to No. 9 EOU

CALDWELL, Idaho – Erika Skindlov scored a tiebreaking goal in the 77th minute to lift No. 9 Eastern Oregon to a 2-1 win over the College of Idaho on Friday afternoon.

The goal spoiled what was a strong effort from the Yotes (2-3-2, 1-2-0) against the third ranked foe on the schedule for the team so far this year.

Skindlov, a freshman from Coeur d'Alene, netted the third goal of her inaugural college season off of an assist from Nan Kiebert, who had a huge match for the Mountaineers.

Prior to the Skindlov strike in the 77th minute, Kiebert had evened the score in the 56th minute on a long through ball past the C of I defense. Kaitlyn McLeod was credited with the assist on the play.

While the end result was not what C of I was hoping for after a gritty first half, there were still multiple bright spots.

Celebrating her 20th birthday, sophomore Laura Staropoli took a far end line centering pass from Madison Glascock in the 48th minute and used her right foot to place it into the left corner of the net for her third career goal.

With the score still even in the 75th minute, Kaya Evans made an impressive slide tackle on a breakaway attempt for Kiebert to prevent what could have been an additional goal for the Mounties (5-0-2, 2-0-1 CCC).

For the first time this season, the Yotes utilized just one goalkeeper, with Kylee Atkins finishing with five saves and two goals allowed. Atkins delivered an impressive fingertip save in the 28th minute on a high rocket towards the top of the frame off the foot of Mackinley Gregus for one of the defensive highlights for C of I.

The Yotes will have a week off before returning to action at Simplot Stadium on Oct. 4 for a date against Providence.
